Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to look after his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the gales across the lone tree on the mountaintop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his charges imbued in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty scheme.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One morning he dashed into the website village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to offer assistance but found nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is hard to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
